Types of Oral Appliances for Treating Sleep Apnea

Many individuals who suffer from sleep apnea discover that the more intense devices, such as the PAP or CPAP machines are not for them. Some dislike the invasiveness of the tubing that provides air to the back of the throat, while others find the apparatus to be loud and inconvenient. Fortunately, there are other options available.

One such option is a Tongue Retaining Device, or TRD. This device work to hold the tongue forward in the mouth, and looks much like a clear retainer. Holding the tongue forward in the mouth allows extra space for air to flow normally, and prevent the normal symptoms of sleep apnea, such as snoring or pausing of breath. Another device is a Mandibular Advancement Device, or MAD. This works in a similar way to the Tongue Retaining Device, in that it not only the tongue is placed forward, but the entire lower jaw, as well. This allows for even more space for air to flow into the air passageways.

While most devices may take a few nights of sleep to get comfortable with, many experience more peaceful sleep due to the change. There are over one hundred approved sleep apnea oral appliances available to aid the areas that need them most.
