Purpose of Dental X-Rays

If you have a dental check-up scheduled, you may learn upon arriving that you need to take some x-rays. This is not uncommon during check-ups, and does not necessarily mean that your dentist thinks there is something wrong with your oral health. It is just a way to check on your oral structure and keep their information updated.

Our dentists in San Fernando Valley take x-rays for several reasons. These reasons include:

•             To see evidence of cavities that they cannot see on their own
•             The status of your wisdom teeth, if they are still in the mouth
•             Signs of bone loss
•             To check progress or the state of the teeth after a procedure

There are also several types of dental x-rays, which are all used for different reasons.

•             Bite wing x-rays show the upper and lower back teeth and how they fit together
•             Periapical x-rays show an entire tooth, from the bottom of the root and its placement in the jawbone to the top of the crown
•             Occlusal x-rays  display the roof or the floor of the mouth, depending on the position, and are used to examine teeth that have not yet emerged through the gums
•             Panoramic x-rays show the lower half of the facial structure, including the teeth, jaw, jaw joints, nasal area, and sinuses.
