How to Keep Teeth White and Clean
We know how important a brilliant and beautiful smile is to you. Our cosmetic dentist has various techniques to whiten and brighten your smile, regardless of the cause of your discoloration. However, once you received your treatments, it is important for you to keep your pearly whites looking white.
There are a number of reasons for tooth discoloration. Some are because of habits like smoking or consuming dark beverages such as cola, coffee, tea, or red wine. Others include aging, a common reason for discoloration, or exposure to certain medications that cause permanent stains that require cover and do not respond to typical whitening treatments.
With the exception of permanent stains, our teeth whitening dentist in San Francisco will use one of our in-office whitening treatments to take away built-up stains. As our dentists will tell you, whitening in the office is only a part of improving your smile. Keeping your smile white will take some effort from you.
Because our behavior causes so many of the teeth stains to occur, making a few changes can go along way to keep your smile looking great.
• One helpful change that will improve your overall health and eliminate the opportunity for stains to develop is to stop using tobacco products. These cause a myriad of health problems while depositing tar and nicotine on the tooth’s surface.
• Drinking dark beverages like coffee, tea, and wine will create unsightly stains on your teeth, especially if you consume these regularly. While we understand you do not want to face the day without your caffeine, if you must drink it, at least take a moment to rinse your mouth afterwards. It is also a good option to use a straw when possible, to allow the liquid to move past your teeth.
• Remember there is no substitute for good dental hygiene. Brush well at least twice a day, floss before bed, use an antiseptic mouthwash to kill the bacteria that can compromise tooth health.
