How Lingual Braces Work

How Lingual Braces WorkLingual braces are placed behind teeth instead of in front. By working similarly to metal braces, lingual braces offer discretion without some of the corrective limitations associated with invisible braces. Here is a look at how this treatment works.

Like conventional metal braces, lingual braces involve brackets, wires, and rubber bands. The brackets are bonded directly to the teeth using dental cement before being threaded with wires, which are held in place by the rubber bands. At regular visits to our office, patients have their braces tightened progressively to push the teeth into the proper places. Although some discomfort can be expected for a few days after initial placement and subsequent tightening appointments, over-the-counter pain relievers can easily relieve the pain. Total treatment tends to last for one to two years but can vary depending on the issues being corrected. Afterwards, patients are given retainers to wear part-time for a specified period.

Most patients who can get traditional metal braces can also wear lingual braces. However, our dentist may advise a different type of braces for patients with deep overbite or very small teeth as these issues can present risks of damage to the braces or complicate placement, respectively. A consultation with our expert in lingual braces in Torrance can be scheduled to learn more about how this treatment works.
