Candidates for Porcelain Veneers

A healthy smile is a sign of a healthy, happy person. Patients who have more than one cosmetic issue with their smile have several options for eliminating them. For example, a smile makeover can be designed, and multiple procedures and treatments can be performed to correct virtually any dental flaw. Some patients may forego this process, and instead opt for veneers.

Porcelain veneers are strong, thin coverings that are bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth. While they don’t solve any cosmetic issues, they do hide those that do not need to be fixed to have a healthy smile. Candidates for porcelain veneers are those teeth are:

  • Stained or discolored
  • Gapped
  • Chipped, cracked, or generally worn
  • Misshapen
  • Mildly misaligned

Patients should otherwise have healthy teeth, gums, and jaws. Serious problems in these areas, such as decay, gum disease, or bruxism should be taken care of before the application of veneers.

These additions do require some preparation of the teeth. Your Los Angeles cosmetic dentist will need to remove some of the enamel from the fronts of the teeth in order to make room for the veneers. Those who qualify may be able to get Lumineers, which are thinner and therefore do not require any removal of enamel.
